Project Overview
The Picnic Guide is an independent publication about food, places, and the people behind them. It covers artisans, markets, and local food culture across Europe.
The guide combines long-form profiles with neighborhood food maps and monthly editorial selections.
NoMaDe designed the digital architecture, with three priorities: give the stories and photography room to breathe, keep the site fast, and make publishing straightforward for the editorial team.
The Challenge
The guide needed more than a collection of articles. A single story might connect an artisan, their shop, a neighborhood, and a broader editorial theme. Those relationships had to be useful to readers and manageable for editors.
Photography was another central consideration. Large images needed to retain their quality without slowing down pages or causing the layout to move as they loaded.
Editors also needed flexibility in how they assembled stories, within layouts that would remain consistent across the publication.
Content Architecture with DatoCMS
We chose DatoCMS based on our experience with the platform and the publication’s content requirements.
Connected content: Artisans, venues, guides, and curated lists have their own reusable records. Editors can reference the same venue or profile across several stories without duplicating its information.
Flexible article layouts: Structured Text and Modular Blocks support photography, pull quotes, venue cards, and editorial roundups. Editors assemble these elements within defined layouts.
Image delivery: DatoCMS’s Imgix integration provides responsive images in modern formats. Image dimensions and low-resolution placeholders help keep layouts stable while photographs load.
Publishing workflow: Drafts, visual previews, and scheduling let the team prepare and review content before publication.
Native Multilingual Architecture (EN / FR / IT)
To authentically connect with local culinary cultures and a diverse international readership, The Picnic Guide is fully localized in three languages: English, French, and Italian.
Leveraging DatoCMS’s native localization engine:
Field-Level Localization: Editors manage trilingual copy side-by-side within a unified record interface, eliminating the risk of orphaned content or out-of-sync regional records.
Localized Slugs & International SEO: Every article, venue, and guide features translated URLs, localized meta tags, and automated `hreflang` headers, ensuring optimal search visibility across European markets.
Locale-Aware Structured Content: Rich text, image captions, and callouts adapt dynamically to each locale, allowing cultural nuances and specific culinary terminology to be preserved accurately in all three languages.
Technical Implementation
The frontend uses TypeScript, static site generation, and edge caching to serve pages efficiently.
DatoCMS webhooks trigger cache revalidation as needed when content changes, reducing the need to rebuild the entire site for individual updates.
The implementation also includes Open Graph metadata, structured data for articles and local establishments, and automated sitemaps.
What This Enables
The editorial team can publish articles, update venue information, and assemble new selections without developer involvement in routine content changes.
Readers can move between stories, artisan profiles, and places through the relationships built into the content model. That same structure gives the publication a way to add coverage of new cities without redesigning how its content is organized.
